Louisiana’s primary mode of transportation is via highway. The state’s location in the Southern U.S. along the Gulf Coast places it along major Interstate corridors. East-west Interstates include I-10 to the south and I-20 to the north; north-south Interstates include I-49, I-55, and I-59. The state also contains many state and U.S. highways, some of which provide wonderful scenic drives, such as Louisiana 1.

Air travel in Louisiana is serviced primarily by Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY), serving over 7 million passengers; Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport (BTR), serving the state capital; Alexandria International Airport (AEX); Chennault International Airport (CWF) in Lake Charles; and Shreveport Regional Airport (SHV). Several other regional airports serve the Pelican State.

Public transportation for commuters can be used within the larger metropolitan areas. For Baton Rouge, the Capital Area Transit System (CATS) offers several local bus routes as well as LSU campus routes. The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority offers numerous bus routes throughout the region, paratransit services, and limited streetcar operations. Jefferson Transit (JeT) serves the urbanized portion of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana and provides service to New Orleans from the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. Shreveport and Bossier City are served by SporTran with 17 routes.

Ferries in the Pelican State provide transport upon the Mississippi River. The state operates three major ferry crossings for the greater New Orleans area through the "Crescent City Connection Division" of the Department of Transportation and Development, including the Algiers/Canal Street ferry, the Gretna/Jackson Avenue crossing, and the Lower Algiers/Chalmette crossing.

Rail service in Louisiana is provided by Amtrak via the City of New Orleans route between New Orleans and Chicago, Illinois, and the Crescent Line between New Orleans and New York City.

Intercity bus service for Louisiana is offered by Greyhound.
